UN DESA/DPIDG and the International Budget Partnership will hold a webinar on “Promoting Independent External Audits on Credibility of Government Budgets: How Supreme Audit Institutions assess and address budget credibility” on 16 June (8.30-9.30 am EDT). The interactive event will invite discussion of the results of a survey distributed to the members of the International Organization of Supreme Audit Institutions (INTOSAI) to learn about their experiences in auditing budget credibility.

HLPF 2022 Side-event "Building Back Better: Institution Building and Youth Engagement in Public Services Delivery in Countries Emerging from Conflicts"

This Side-Event to the HLPF, entitled Building Back Better: Institution Building and Youth Engagement in Public Services Delivery in Countries Emerging from Conflicts will address SDG 4 on quality education, and SDG 5 on gender equality, as well as the principles of effective governance for sustainable development, in particular the principles of leaving no one behind, non-discrimination, participation, and intergenerational equity.

HLPF Side Event: Transforming Institutions to Build Back Greener: the Case for Natural Capital Accounting

The Committee of Experts on Public Administration (CEPA) and Committee of Experts on Environmental Economic Accounting organized this side event, held on 12 July 2022, on the occasion of the high-level political forum. The event examined how natural capital accounting (NCA) can help to measure and track climate change and biodiversity, thus providing all institutions with a “common denominator” in the effort to address climate change and biodiversity.

UN DESA’s Division for Public Institutions and Digital Government (DPIDG) is organizing two inter-linked capacity development activities under the umbrella of “Advancing innovative and inclusive partnerships and governance in pursuit of the Sustainable Development Goals” as part of the 2022 International Association of Schools and Institutes of Administration (IASIA) Conference which will take place in Rabat, Morocco on July 25-29, 2022. The IASIA Conference will focus on “Implementing and Promoting Effective Governance Principles to Leave No One, No Place Behind”.

2020 UN Public Service Day

On 23 June the United Nations celebrated UN Public Service Day by focusing on the critical role public servants have played in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA) and the Ministry of the Interior and Safety of the Republic of Korea organized a virtual event to pay homage to public servants who have been working on the frontlines and to recognize the lifesaving work they have undertaken during the pandemic.

It requires more than ever innovative and collaborative measures by all countries and the global community to contain the spread and mitigate its far-reaching repercussions.

The global health, economic and human crisis driven by the COVID-19 pandemic highlights the need to accelerate the implementation of the 2030 Agenda and to keep the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) on track. The mobilization of public resources and other sources of funding, emergency spending, redirection of funds and debt management are essential to address the consequences of the crisis. The pandemic requires decisive action, but transparency and accountability should be embedded in all COVID-19 fiscal responses and efforts to building back better.
