The United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs, the International Development Law Organization and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Italy are co-organizing the fourth SDG 16 Conference to take place from 30 May to 1 June 2023 in Rome, Italy.
2023 SDG 16 Conference – SDG 16 as a compass for navigating intersecting crises
The overarching theme of the 2023 Conference will be “SDG 16 as a compass for navigating intersecting crises.” Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 16, in addition to being a standalone goal, is also an enabler of all other SDGs. It is at the heart of what makes the 2030 Agenda transformative, and it can play a vital role in addressing the key challenges that the world is currently facing. The Conference will help to identify solutions to inform the development of the UN’s New Agenda for Peace, restore trust in public institutions, and accelerate transformative action to respond to crises of food systems and climate change. These themes will be explored during three high-level plenary sessions, while various topics under each will be examined in a series of parallel sessions.
The Conference will also feature two plenary sessions on, respectively, “Measuring progress on SDG 16 at the halfway mark of the implementation of the 2030 Agenda” and “The way forward – SDG Summit and Beyond.”
The Conference will bring together various stakeholders from different regions including representatives of governments at all levels, non-governmental organizations, academic institutions and the United Nations system. It will engage civil society networks working on SDG 16, and further highlight the role of partnerships. Discussions will integrate the perspectives of youth and women and consider cross-cutting dimensions such as digitalization.
