DPIDG together with UNPOG and the Korea Research Institute for Local Administration (KRILA) organized a UN DESA-KRILA Forum on "Strengthening Public Governance and Accelerating Digital Transformation of Local Government for Emergency Response and Revitalization of Local Economy in the Post-COVID-19 Era", held on 7 July 2021 (2:00-4:30 PM Seoul Time, GMT+9).
The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly hampered the progress of implementing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It underscored the importance of public governance, especially the crucial role of local government as the first responder to implement the emergency response measures on the ground and ensure inclusion and protection of all citizens, including disadvantaged and vulnerable populations. The significant repercussions of the COVID-19 pandemic on the economy, particularly on jobs and loss of income, also call for a more proactive role of local government in revitalizing the economy in the post-COVID-19 era. At the same time, with ICTs and digital technologies at the heart of the COVID-19 response and preparation for the post-COVID-19 era, the pandemic has become the new driver for digital transformation at all levels.
The Forum is organized to discuss strategies, approaches and experiences in strengthening public governance and leveraging ICTs and digital government for digital transformation of local government for the resilient, sustainable and inclusive COVID-19 recovery. The Forum also aims to exchange good practices and lessons learned in the emergency response and for better preparation for the post-COVID-19 era.
We hope that the Forum will be a meaningful occasion to share insightful ideas and foster partnerships during this very challenging time.
