Global Initiative on Governance for the Sustainable Development Goals
The Global Initiative on Governance for the SDGs engages schools of public administration and regional associations of public administration around the world to strengthen the capacities of governments and public servants (in terms of knowledge, skills, attitude, leadership competences and mindset) to support the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The Global Initiative was established in 2018 following a meeting that was held in Morocco with Schools of Public Administration who expressed an interest in working together. It is composed of regional task forces of schools of public administration.
The SDGs require a cross-section of competencies, as these set the standards for public service performance and progress measurement. Public service competency frameworks are being updated to include holistic systems-thinking skills and behaviours, partnerships and collaboration across government and non-state actors. The initiative aims to support dialogue among the schools of public administration within and across regions on the importance of mainstreaming the SDGs in their training programs and developing the necessary skills of public servants to respond to governments’ priorities in implementing the 2030 Agenda.
The main objectives of the Global Initiative are:
- To inspire public sector leaders and public servants to mainstream the principles of the 2030 Agenda and to include the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in their public-sector performance strategies, plans and programs;
- To inspire Institutes responsible for training public servants to include in their training curricula both the principles and the Goals of the sustainable development agenda;
- To contribute to the development of the competencies required by public sector leaders and public servants for the achievement of SDGs through the development of revised and/or new curricula, and
- To develop a Curriculum on Governance for the SDGs in collaboration with experts and schools of public administration.
